Euclid Recreation Goes Green on Opening of C.E. Orr Ice Arena

painting the ice

This year the Euclid Parks & Recreation Department is conserving water and recylcing the water from Memorial Pool to make the sheets of ice for the C.E. Orr Ice Arena.  Our Parks & Recreation maintenance employees made up a device to use the pool vaccuum pump and a 1 inch garden hose from the pool to the arena. There will be a total of 16 sheets (layers) of water and two layers of paint that will make the ice usable for all.  Each layer is spread on the ice rink floor, taking about one and a half hours for each layer.  After each layer is put on the rink pad you have to wait for it to freeze before spreading the next level. Total amount of water that will be used is approximately 10,000 gallons of water.  The Arena is scheduled to open on Saturday, September 25th, with a season opening special from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.  $ 3.00 admission, includes skate rental.

This year we will be offering 3 sessions of learn to skate for all.  Each session is 8 weeks long with classes being offered Tuesday or Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.  $ 45.00 residents, $ 60 non-residents, includes USFSA membership.  Session 1 - October 5 - November 30 (Tuesdays) and October 7 - December 2 (Thursdays).  Register at the ice arena Sept. 28 and 30th from 6 to 7 p.m.  Public skates will be held on Tuesday and Fridays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
