Planning a vacation everyone will enjoy

Summer is a great time for family vacations, reunions and weekend getaways. You may have concerns if your travel group includes a parent, an older companion or someone with physical limitations. But, don’t let that stop you. With a little bit of extra planning, you can pull off a vacation everyone will enjoy.

Here are a few tips

Air Travel

Try to book direct flights. Talk to the airline ahead of time to arrange for a wheelchair and an escort to help you get around in the airport. They will help transport your luggage, too.  If your traveling companion requires oxygen, ask the airlines about their requirements.

Hotels

Think about your companion’s special needs. Would a room on the ground floor or one close to the elevator be preferred? Will they need a larger bathroom equipped with safety rails or a roll-in shower?  Will he or she prefer a room away from traffic and noise so they can nap?  Don’t wait until check-in to ask for these accommodations.

Medical Equipment

Make it easy on yourself. Don’t try to lug heavy medical equipment with you. Instead, contact a local medical supply company at your destination to ask about renting what you need. Many companies will have your extra oxygen tank, tub seat, beach wheelchair and any other equipment you need waiting at your destination if you call ahead.

Insurance and Other Records

It is a good idea to make sure your parent or companion has given their insurance company written consent for you to discuss their medical and insurance matters on their behalf. Ask the agent or insurance provider whether coverage extends to your vacation destination. If there are limitations, look into travel insurance so everyone is protected when you travel outside your coverage area.

Medical Questions

Contact your companion’s doctor to confirm they are able to travel. Request the name of a physician at your destination for emergencies. If you are flying, pack medications in a transparent bag kept in your carry-on luggage. Should you forget medications at home, contact a local pharmacy to arrange for an emergency supply.

Finally, build in extra time for relaxation and afternoon breaks. Don’t rush. Make this vacation a memory both of you will enjoy for years to come.
