Hands-On Learning Focus: Clean Water

As part of Cleveland's Year of Clean Water, Our Lady of the Lake School got a grant to study local water. OLL has STEM programs at all grade levels, and this cool project is a great example. Second graders in Ms Zbiegen's class and Mrs. Ezzo’s class will be doing a whole unit on water filtration and water quality, as a fun way to study the scientific method as it applies to their daily lives. They've learned all about what children in other countries have to do to get clean water. Now they're learning about our own water supply right here. They are visiting Lake Erie, and going online to chart bacteria levels. They're visiting the Waste Water Treatment plant, to learn more about water management systems. They are using CAD software to create their own water filter designs, and then they're going downtown to Cleveland Public Library's TechCentral MakerSpace, where they'll use 3D printers to produce actual models of their designs.

You can see the fun things they’re learning and creating, along with lots more great STEM projects when Our Lady of the Lake School hosts their STEM Open House on October 23, between 9:00-10:00am and again from 1:00-2:00pm. The event is free and open to the public. For information, call (216) 481-6824.
