Team Evert

Euclid Senior, Tom Evert, is going “Going for the Gold!” A group of local residents are supporting him in his efforts to be represented as “our local swimmer” who qualified to be in the National Senior Olympic Games. These are to be held this summer in Bloomington/Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota on July 3-16th, 2015.

Today Tom has been training right here in good old Euclid at the various recreation pools. Swim instructor, Laureen Deveney, was personally invited to be his swim coach.  Both have benefited.  They profit by all who come into swim. Sometimes by simply introducing their goal to others. Take for example, Barb Cvelbar, who swims routinely to exercise her new knee. She is constantly giving them her moral support. She was enlisted to be the assistant coach for “Team Evert”. And for those of you who were fortunate enough to witness them, it was not a super hero in front of the Euclid Library group, but “Team Evert” doing their own thing. It was in fact, Barb who had been enlisted to hold the banner during the 2015 Memorial Day Parade. At other times the various lifeguards chipped in, CeCe Kochavar and Valerie Mignona, have offered additional training ideas, since they both are athletes in additional sports, soccer and ice skating respectively. Ms. Deveney's motto is "There are a hundred ways to skin a cat." Mostly she spies on other champion swimmers, watching their turns or dives, then integrating what seems to be the most proficient (thank you Mrs. Beth Darcy for that nice flip turn) to the work out.

Tom was born, raised, and still resides in Euclid, Ohio as a resident. Although, he did live outside this city for twelve years while he established himself as a world class dance performer.  Many have you might recognize or have seen Mr. Evert' name in the dance world. He is Director for Dancevert.  Occasionally, he works out of the Shore Cultural Arts Center where he often times performs or gives classes.

While it is Evert's desire is to win all his events: the men’s 100 yard Individual Medley,  the 50 yard Freestyle; he truly hopes to bring home the 50 yard  Butterfly most. Why? Because “it seems so dance like.” During the most recent Columbus regionals, he brought home several golds and improvement over last year’s bronzes.

Laureen Deveney

Laureen does a lot of different things. Trained as a visual artist and teacher, but she works as a self-employed as a heath-care worker and as a lifeguard and swim instructor for the city of Euclid in their Aquatics department.
