Boulevard Church Takes Students See The Movie Selma

Boulevard Elder Fran Hunter

"This is the best field trip we've had all year!" Those were the words of one of the bus drivers who transported 120 students and teachers from Euclid and John Hay High Schools to Lakeshore Cinema to see the profoundly moving film Selma on January 22, 2015, and then took them on to Boulevard Presbyterian Church for a Happy's pizza lunch and a panel discussion.

The church building buzzed with energy as the students arrived.  During the panel discussion, teachers Mr. Jason Cleaver (Euclid) and Mrs. Sherlynn Allen-Harris (John Hay and Tri-C) offered their observations on the film's accuracy.  Pastor John Lentz reflected on the ways in which his youthful participation in protest marches and in the beginnings of de-segregation have influenced his ministry.  And Boulevard Elder Fran Hunter shared stories of her own rich and varied life experiences. All of the panelists urged the young people to get out and vote, and to work for change and justice in our society.

The Presbyterian Church (USA) has a long tradition of engagement in education and social justice. Boulevard Church was able to offer this opportunity to the students thanks to an education grant from the Synod of the Covenant and to the many members of the church who contributed funding, time, and energy.  It was an exciting day for all ages!
