Euclid's 2014 Memorial Day Parade A Proud Tradition

Parade Judges, Brian Moore and Fay Miller

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in which the men and women who died while serving our country are remembered.  For the past 84 years, the City of Euclid has honored and celebrated our Veterans on this day. This celebration dates back to 1930, when services were held at St. Paul and Euclid Village Cemeteries, with speakers at Euclid Central High School, under the guidance of the Euclid American Legion, Post #343.  Prior to 1930, Euclid Village held observances in 1924 and 1925, under the guidance of the village council.

The Euclid Joint Veterans Council Memorial Day Association, chaired by Mr. Chuck Hill, plays an integral role in coordinating these events.  Preceding the parade, graveside services are held at Euclid and St. Paul Cemeteries; an observance also followed the parade.  This year, the weather was perfect and the gatherings were solemn.

As in the past, this year's parade was an intergenerational event, that not only honored our heroes, but also gave parade-goers a glimpse of the other fine organizations from our community who opted to join in the festivities.  Highlights of the parade included recognition of the veterans for their dedication to our country.  Some of these men and women walked the entire distance of the parade route; others were escorted by trolley or other vehicles and were visible through the windows.  They are proud of the role they played in shaping our country and protecting our freedoms; they had made many sacrifices, and this annual event provides a special salute to them.  It is a privilege and a heart touching event to experience.

Among those who joined our Veterans were Mayor Bill Cervenik, members of his administration and staff, members of Euclid Safety Forces, council/school board members, children representing various community groups, businesses and churches.

As judges of the parade, we would like to thank those who realize the importance of this annual event and who have made a continued commitment to keep this holiday tradition alive.  We also would like to thank the following participants who were awarded participation trophies: Navy Jr. ROTC, JNROTC Drill Team (Entire Unit), Euclid High School Marching Band, The Irish American Club East Side (Entire Unit), Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame, The Girl Scouts, Bike Euclid, Euclid Fire Department, Euclid Pet Pals, Miss Poppy,  and Northcoast PT Cruisers.

We encourage and welcome other groups/organization to take the opportunity in 2015 to join in the celebration of our Veterans, our freedoms, and the City of Euclid by participating in the parade.  Dust off your patriotism and show others how proud you are to be Americans!

We thank all the judges, including Ms. D. Fay Miller and Mr. Brian Moore.
