Panther girls break four swim records

As the seasons have changed, weather-wise, so have the sports seasons for our local schools. And the Euclid High School girls’ swimming team started off the season with a bang, breaking four school records in its opening meet with Magnificat High.

The team has trained hard during the off season and the girls made a strong showing against a tough Magnificat squad before losing by a score of 87-83.

Marisa Melchior, Emily Sweet, Andrea Bartel, and Samantha (“Sam”) Lisy set a new school record in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:48.76. Andrea Bartel broke the school record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.57, and Sam Lisy set two individual school records with a 2:13.11 clocking in the 200 individual medley, and a 1:01.83 in the 100 backstroke.

Also posting individual victories were Emily Sweet in the 100 freestyle and Marisa Melchior (who recently signed a letter of intent to swim for Wright State University) in both the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Andrea Bartel won the 100 butterfly.

Great job, ladies! Your hard training and determination is paying off. Hope to see you at states later this season.

Meanwhile, the boys’ swim team lost to St. Ignatius, 103-65, although Xavier Crocker won the 100 backstroke in that meet, and Austin Williams won both the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Austin, Xavier, Aaron DeAngelis, and Danny Essel teamed up to capture both the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Austin says: "We have many new swimmers this year, and we have the potential to go far. We have a chance to win the Cleveland Heights Relays.”

Who knows, maybe the team will finish on top in that one. I hope the Panther swimmers know that they have the support of many fans in Euclid. Good luck to you all!
