EFCU college scholarship winners

Eaton Family Credit Union is very proud to announce that Aaron DeAngelis, Byren Malone and Jaclyn Noonan have each been awarded $1,000 college scholarships.

“This year the selection committee raised the bar even higher. These kids are real achievers,” Losneck said. “In addition to great grades and test scores, they’re involved in the community. We are committed to helping our members and their children achieve their financial goals.”

DeAngelis attended Euclid High School and was also a Post Secondary Enrollment Option student at Lakeland College. He will attend Mount Union College in Alliance this fall. With a concentration in business, DeAngelis will also study computer science. An honor roll student, he works as a lifeguard during school and in the summer.

Lakeshore Coffee House serves a loyal clientele

In Downtown Euclid’s oldest commercial strip — the string of retail establishments between East 218th and East 222nd streets — many businesses have come and gone over the last two decades. But, like the little train that could, the Lake Shore Coffee House keeps on chugging along.

“We have a really great loyal clientele,” says proprietor Greg Lawrence. This cozy coffee house, known for its casual, relaxed atmosphere — as well as its fresh-brewed coffee, is approaching 19 years in business. It is easily recognizable from the street as the place with the sidewalk table for patrons who enjoy sipping or snacking al fresco.

“We opened the coffee house in 1992, just about the time that a Seattle startup company began branching out,” Lawrence points out. “That company was Starbucks.”

The long-time Euclid businessman has actually been on the strip since 1989, when he moved his real estate and insurance office from East 200th Street to Downtown Euclid. He believes his three businesses may be the longest-running establishments on the strip.

Tobacco Shop closing after 10 years in Euclid

For more than 10 years, Gary Peters’ I-Deal Tobacco shop has been a fairly busy place, attracting cigar and cigarette fanciers as well as the lottery-playing crowd. One of its claims to fame these days is that it may be the only retail business in Euclid where patrons are allowed to smoke. In fact, Gary typically has several ashtrays sitting on the counter.

But now that the exterior of his building has undergone a welcome facelift as part of the Downtown Euclid renovation, Gary is closing the shop at 199 East 228th Street, just around the bend where Shore Center Drive meanders toward Lakeshore Boulevard.
