At 4:07 a.m. on July 16, the EFD was dispatched to 821 East 222nd St. for smoke coming from the upstairs windows of a mixed use building. On arrival one minute later, smoke and fire were encountered by EFD firefighters. EFD personnel went to work and entered the unsecured building. One hoseline was taken inside and upstairs where a burning mattress was located. The fire was quickly extinguished and smoke was removed from the structure using fans. While the building appeared vacant at the time of the fire, evidence at the scene suggested a person or people had been inside earlier in the night. Searches were conducted but no one was found inside. The fire was confined to the room of origin, though smoke damaged other sections of the second floor. No injuries were reported to the 16 Euclid firefighters who were on scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
