April is National Credit Union Youth Month

April is National Credit Union Youth Month and “we’re pumped up” to help our youngest Members get into shape financially.

This year’s theme is “Credit Union Strong: Pump Up Your Savings.” Here are some tips for youths to strengthen their savings:

Make some money: even young kids can earn money by doing odd jobs or from an allowance. Ask them to save some of it. This will help them get comfortable making and managing their cash.

Pay yourself first: Encourage your youth to set aside a portion of their money before doing anything else with it. If the youth can’t easily access the money, they’re less likely to spend it.

Learn wants vs. needs: when an urge to buy something arises, have your youth write it down on a piece of paper. Ask them if it’s a need or want. They’ll learn to prioritize how to spend their money.
