EHS Untouchables get "RoBOTTY" at AWT RoboBot Competition

After months of preparation, six Euclid High School students reported to Lakeland Community College on April 25th to participate in the fifth annual AWT RoboBot Competition.  An event orchestrated by the Alliance for Working Together, “a coalition started by Fredon of at least 75 local companies seeking to encourage youth to consider jobs in manufacturing.” The competition has grown from seven high schools to 35 this year.

Euclid High School physics teacher, Bob Torrelli, and Forest Park Middle School assistant principal, Jason Coleman, fostered the EHS Robotics Team.  A team made up of physics students Jack Munro, Eddie Conger, Josh Ritchey, Joe Sudar, Dayna Shirer, and Mariah Workman. The team worked tirelessly for over six months to create an indestructible robot for battle. A 15 pound aluminum frame with three motors, heat-treated steel blades, and Lexan armor controlled by a 6 channel helicopter remote control.

HGR Industrial Surplus and SC Industries sponsored several Saturday morning work sessions complete with breakfast for the EHS Robotics Team. Through the sponsorship and support of HGR Industrial Surplus (Tina Dick) and SC Industries (Tim Lining and Gary Heiden), the rookie EHS team was able to build a robot. A battle bot that took them all the way to the fourth round of Saturday’s competition. Their sponsorship offered design tips and provided the materials and equipment.

“The tournament was a double elimination affair, with the 15-pound robots fighting one-on-one in three-minute bouts. A fully enclosed clear dome served as the battle arena and two large projector screens displayed the action to give the spectators a better view.” The EHS Untouchables tied for the ninth place (out of 35 schools) and won the award for Best Sportsmanship. Despite the competition coming to a conclusion, the EHS Robotics Team already has their sights set on next year and looks forward to continuing to grow partnerships with Euclid companies.
