Pla-Mor Roller Rink a Success Story during trying Times

Cliff Murray and Warren Hatchett - Two of the owners of the Pla-Mor

A bit more than a year ago, Pla-Mor roller rink opened its doors for roller skaters of all ages. The rink, which sits at 22466 Shore Center Dr., is ideally located for the local community and surrounding suburbs to enjoy. Four of the five investors Reginald Day, Joycelyn Hansen, Warren Hatchett and Cliff Murray are active roller skaters. Over the years they developed a strong friendship, and when the opportunity to purchase the former Rollerdrome came along, the group pooled their resources and became the proud owners of the Pla-Mor, fulfilling a long time dream.

A major attraction of the Pla-Mor for many skaters is the floor. At 17,000 square feet, it is one of the largest in the Cleveland area. The floor is almost as smooth as glass and well-maintained. Skater enjoy a variety of music, including R & B, hip-hop, top 40s and jazz.

The Pla-Mor has a loyal following of skaters. They come from as far away as Pittsburgh on a regular basis to skate, socialize and exercise. Fred Wesley drives in from Maple Heights. “I have met friends here and business contacts,” he said. “People who skate are always good people.” Some have likened the owners and skaters to Cheers: Everybody knows your name. Many come to the Pla-Mor more than once a week and they have gotten to know each other very well. Some come for the exercise and others just watch the skaters and enjoy the music.

Pla-Mor is an excellent venue for hosting many types of events. The Burning River roller girls, of the women's roller derby, circuit have chosen the Pla-Mor roller rink as their practice facility. The rink is also used for club style dances, business meetings and senior social events. The facility also accommodates birthday parties and private parties.

Pla-Mor is open six days a week for public skating, Saturday 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. are family sessions. Monday skating sessions include inspirational music, and run from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Adult-only skating takes place Tuesdays from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Thursdays from 9 p.m. till midnight. Friday skating sessions, 9 p.m. to midnight, are for all ages.

Admission ranges from $4-$7 per person depending on the day of the week. Call (216) 731-5000 or go to the website at www.pla-morskating.com for more information.

Publisher’s Note: I used to come here in the sixties with Circle 2. Then in the eighties I brought my three kids here to skate with their classes. Just walking through the door brings back so many memories. The rink looks fantastic, and it still smells the same. We are so lucky these local business owners have reopened the rink so whole new generations can make new memories.—John Copic
