University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s caps 18-month strategic growth with acquisition of two prominent pediatric practices

CLEVELAND – After 18 months of strategic growth initiatives, University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s (UH Rainbow) now provides comprehensive and integrated care to more children in Northeast Ohio than ever before.  The physicians of two prominent practices – Green Road Pediatrics in South Euclid and KidsFirst Pediatrics in Willoughby Hills – chose to join UH Rainbow for the more than 20,000 children they see annually.

UH Rainbow’s growth includes the UH Rainbow Center for Women & Children, a state-of-the-art urban academic health center in MidTown; recruitment of national experts to its faculty; and collaboration with like-minded pediatric health organizations across the region. 

The UH Rainbow Center experienced substantial growth since opening its doors in July 2018. Of note, the location is on track to have over 100,000 annual patient encounters. The center is also a primary site for groundbreaking medical research on women’s health including long acting reversal contraception, post-partum depression, and follow-up strategies for patients to connect with social support systems.

As UH Rainbow’s access points increased, the children’s hospital attracted top talent from across the country. In Spring 2018, Marlene Miller, MD, MSc, was appointed Pediatrician-in-Chief for UH and Chair, Department of Pediatrics, UH Rainbow. Dr. Miller came to UH from the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore where she served as pediatrics’ chief quality officer for the health system.  In her short tenure, Dr. Miller has recruited national leaders, deepening the expertise at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s.

This summer, UH Rainbow welcomed Michael Glotzbecker, MD, from Boston Children’s as Division Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery; Charles Macias, MD, MPH, from Texas Children’s to serve as both Division Chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Vice Chair of Quality and Safety/Chief Quality Officer; and Christina Nguyen, MD, from Pittsburgh Children’s who assumed the role of Division Chief, Pediatric Nephrology. Cynthia Bearer, MD, PhD, from University of Maryland and Editor-in-Chief of peer-review journal Pediatric Research, joined as Division Chief of Neonatology on Dec. 1, 2019.

A strong presence in the community is a top priority for UH Rainbow, and several new opportunities came to fruition in 2019 to expand the hospital’s footprint in Cleveland. UH Rainbow now collaborates in pediatric specialty care services for MetroHealth patients in cardiology, GI, nephrology, surgery, urology, radiology and rehabilitation. UH Rainbow is also the medical provider for The Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center; provides Medical Directorship for psi, Ohio’s largest provider of school health services; and has teamed-up with Highland Springs to open Changes®, an outpatient center in Solon that provides mental health and substance abuse treatment for children and teens.
